RE: Driving in the mountains!

I have an 03 DodgeHD, SO 5.9 CTD with Auto and have made the trip from Texas to Oregon. Stops in Ruidoso NM, Durango CO, Ouray CO, Moab UT, Bend OR, Eugene OR, Waldport Or. Purchased a Mountain Directory West for Truckers, Rv, and Motorhome drivers before the trip and planned my route knowing where and what % grade I will be climbing and decending. Kept me off Red Mountain Pass (million dollar hwy)between Silverton and Ouray CO. Drove around through Cortez and Telluride. I do not have an exhaust break and had no problem. Just took it slow, took it out of overdrive, once speed built up would hit breaks to slow to 40 then stay off them until you need to slow again. This summer we drove to Glacier NP MO, Yellowstone NP WY, Rocky Mountain NP using the Mountain Directory and using the same techniques and had no problems at all. The Dodge CTD is one powerful truck. On the road 7 weeks, ended up going to South Padre Island TX then home. Averaged 13.9 mpg for entire trip. Saw some awesome scenery and wild animals. WOW!!

Best campground near Glacier Ntl Pk

We are planning a trip from FTW Tx. to Rapid City SD. Spending a week or so in SD. Then plan to travel from Rapid City up to Glacier Ntl Pk. Where is the best RV campground on the western side, close to GNP? We need full hookup. 34ft fifth wheel, 3 slide/large bed, quad cab tow vehicle. We like to have our space. Don't know how long we will be there, until we get tired of looking around I guess. Travelling end of Aug/first Sep. Will then travel to Yellowstone for a couple of weeks. Appreciate any help you can give me.

RE: Looking for destination suggestions...

We really enjoy Durango Co. Stayed a month at Alpen Rose camp ground. (Aug/Sep) Also enjoyed the now Durango Riverside Resort right on the Animas River. You have the Durango-Silverton RR, which is a must, plus the Museum. Lots of white water rafting, fishing. Rent a jeep and do some 4 wheelin on some fantastic trails. Mesa Verde National Park is a must see, we drove over for the day and took the bus tour to see it all in one day plus the narrated tour operator. Mesa Verde is huge but well worth the trip. Drive from Durango up to Silverton and over To Ouray. Between Silverton and Ouray is the Million Dollar Highway. WOW!! Don't drive your RV over this stretch, but WOW!! what a view. We took a tour of a silver mine in Ouray. That was an experience. We have stayed in Ouray at the KOA. They call Ouray "little Switzerland". Beautiful place. Then over to Moab, Ut. Hot in summer but probably one the most beautiful places we have been. Arches National Park, plus others I can't remember. This trip wouldn't be too far to drive.

RE: south padre island??

We usually stay at the South Padre KOA. I don't care for the large rock used to park the RV's on, but do enjoy the location. Free fishing pier is fun, has resturant, fishing charters, pool. Facilities are well maintained. I have ridden my bike through Isle Blanca County Park which is very close to the beach and jetty. Some say its too close to the beach therefore too windy. There are 540 sites but this park is mainly a winter destination so I think there would be plenty of room between May-Dec. Lots of good resturants on South Padre. We enjoy Blackbeards for blackened grouper or flounder. Pirates Landing in Port Isabelle. We love SPI.

RE: Gun on trailer?

I carry. Completed CHL (Concealed Handgun License) training in February 08. Recieved my License in May 08. In Texas, "effective 9/1/2007, a person who can legally possess a firearm may possess or carry a handgun in a motor vehicle(including an RV with living quarters) that is owned by or under the lawful control of the person. However, the firearm must be concealed."

RE: Keystone Warranty Issues?

I have had 2 Keystone products. First was a 03 Sprinter with one slide. Had several warranty issues but Keystone was great, dealer was very slow in obtaining parts. I called Keystone and had the parts the next day. Traded to an 07 Montana, very few warranty issues. Again a different dealer was hesitant to call Montana on a warranty issue, finally they called Keystone and they took care of the problem. Keystone has been great for me, the dealers sometimes have to be challenged. If they don't make the call to Keystone I don't have a problem calling. I love my Montana!!

RE: Buying new 5er

Your final 5 looks very simular to my final 6. I don't think you can go wrong with any one of your choises. Hitch Hiker II by Nu Wa was my number 6. I started with a Keystone and after 5 yrs my wife was willing to spend more time on the road and wanted more room for her clothes, etc. I wanted something close to 30 ft, pin weight appropriate, 16 in wheels, king bed, real living with large window. I spent a year investigating all the units fitting those criteria. Spent time on the owner internet forums for each unit. I spent a lot of time at the dealerships by myself and wife asking questions. Checked out the service areas and talked to customers who brought their units in for work. I waited til the model year was about to end and started getting price quotes from each dealer. I didn't go with the lowest price but went to the dealership I felt would give me the best service after the sale. I walked in to the dealership and offered him a price. (30% off MSRP, if you can find one) It took an hour or so but he accepted my offer. I ended up getting another Keystone, a Montana this time and everyone is happy. One thing I wish I would have worked into my price was better tires. I have Mission tires from China and do not feel comfortable with them. After the first year will put better tires on the unit. The 2008 Montanas now at my dealer has GoodYear tires. (from China? I don't know) Go with what the wife likes and you can't go wrong. Drove my wife crazy with all the analysis but we are both happy with the outcome. Good luck to you, you can't go wrong with any of your final 5.

RE: Corpus Christi,TX

WE enjoy Gulf Waters when we go to Port Aransas. A much wider site with concrete patio. You have to subscribe to their WIFI if you must have WIFI. No pull throughs but you have a host to help you park and the sites are very large and no problem backing into. Plenty of grass for the dogs. Boardwalk over the dunes to the beach. Nice heated pool.

RE: exit window flew off !!!!!!!!!

Happened to me also, unit was still under warranty so Keystone replaced the window. The window didn't come out but was flapping in the wind. The latch was gone. Thank goodness for duct tape. Very windy travel day that day.

RE: The black tank valve was open....

I purchased from camping world a twist on slide valve to fit on the end of the trailers dump pipe. The swivel adapter of the sewer hose mounts right up to the slide valve. There will not be anymore spilling of waste water. I can also regulate the speed of the water going into the hose so the hose stays in one place. Seems there was always a suprise when you open the termination cap to put on your sewer hose. Not any more.

RE: Fredericksburg Texas

Have stayd at Fredericksburg RV park. Nice enough, but WIFI was not working at our site. A new RV park and the trees are still very small, so not much shade. Close to downtown. We always enjoy our stay in Fredericksburg.

RE: padre island

Stayed at KOA in SPI from mid Dec thru mid Jan. Not a fan of large rock for your trailer base, and the lots are very close. Friendly staff, had a great time on the fishing pier. Rest rooms/showers are freshly renovated and very nice. You get a discount on the bay fishing charter by staying at the KOA. We caught lot of sea trout and had the resturant on the pier cook them for us.YUM!! We plan to go back down to SPI in April and will try the County Park Isle Blanco. Large (540 sites) park right next to the beach and jetty. Many winter Texans have already left for home so there should be plenty of space.

RE: Be Nice, Need feedback regarding different 5th Wheels

I like to travel in the mountains, so I wanted something smaller (30-32ft) to fit in the smaller campgrounds. Ended up with a 33ft. Wife wanted a king size bed and enough storage for her clothes. We both liked the rear living room because of the large picture window. I wanted 16 inch tires. Wife wanted a convection/microwave oven, enough counter top area to cook a meal, with double sinks, and nice sized pantry. AC in bedroom just in case it turns very warm. A closet by the door for jackets, umbrellas, hats, gloves etc. Artic package for additional r values. Regular sized comode. Roomy shower with 10 gal or larger water heater. We like the table and chairs rather than the dinette. Trailer set up for satelite and cable. At least 2 slides, ended up with 3. We are on the move a lot and didn't want a large trailer. Didn't get the washer/dryer but our unit is set up for one in case we change our minds. Looked for over a year. Went to RV shows, dealers and internet for info. Looked at 100's of 5ers and narrowed to 6. Studied all 6 very closely on how they were assembled. Studied the RV dealers service dept to see how they treat their customers, quality of work and how long it takes to get things done. Compared prices for all 6 which gave me the knowledge to deal with the other dealers. Could have gone with any of the 6 but in my mind one stood out better than the others. Drove my wife crazy toward the end, but got what we wanted. Good luck and happy hunting for your new 5th wheel. You will love it!!!!

RE: Hauling a 5th Wheel

Most people seem to want to upgrade after a few years and usually that means longer and heavier. I started out with a 2500HD Dodge with Cummins turbo diesel and now wished I started with the one ton 3500HD Dodge Cummins. Your tow vehicle will determine how much 5er you can safely pull. The one ton give you a lot more choises. I wouldn't look at anything other than a diesel.
